Home / Glossary / Cold Transfer
A cold transfer, also called a blind transfer, is when a call is connected directly to another person or department without any advance conversation or context. The caller is passed through immediately, and the recipient answers without knowing who is calling or why.
Cold transfers are fast and simple. The receptionist or system routes the call to the destination and disconnects, leaving the caller and recipient to sort out the details.
They work well when the destination is obvious, such as a caller who already asked for a specific extension. They are less ideal for calls that need context, because the caller may have to repeat information.
Cold transfers are the counterpart to warm transfers, where a brief handoff conversation happens before the caller is connected.
