Voicemail

Voicemail is a system that records audio messages from callers when a call is not answered. The caller hears a greeting, leaves a spoken message, and the recipient can listen to it later. It is a one-way method of capturing calls that go unanswered.

Voicemail is the most basic form of missed-call handling. When no one answers, the caller is invited to record a message that the business retrieves later by phone or app.

While useful, voicemail has limits. Many callers hang up rather than leave a message, and messages can pile up unheard. It also cannot answer questions, book appointments, or route urgent calls.

Answering services and AI receptionists are often used in place of, or alongside, voicemail so that callers reach a responsive assistant instead of a recording.

Common questions

Is an AI receptionist better than voicemail?

For many businesses, yes. Voicemail only records a message, while an AI receptionist can answer questions, take structured messages, and route or schedule, so fewer callers hang up.
